Spunlace nonwoven fabric, also known as hydroentangled nonwoven, is made by directing fine, high-pressure water jets onto a loose fiber web. The jets entangle the fibers mechanically, so the cloth is bonded without adhesive, resin or heat sealing. The finished fabric is uniform, flexible and strong, with a clean surface that works well as a base for further processing.
Polyester spunlace is valued as a base cloth because it is light, dimensionally stable and consistent from roll to roll. It can be laminated, coated or molded without losing its shape, which is why it appears in both automotive interiors and synthetic leather.
Fiber type, basis weight, width and structure can all be adjusted, so one manufacturing process can meet very different base cloth requirements.
